It’s hard not to fall in love with Marrkech. The muted warm colours, busy souks and narrow darbs, the most awesome food and the thrill of surviving a taxi journey in the city! Anjali and Joe choose the palatial Beldi Country Club just outside the Medina as the venue for their wedding. I have to admit that when I entered the grounds, I was in awe! Anjali and Joe were joined by their family an closest friends, travelling from all over the world to be with them to celebrate their wedding. When I first chatted to Anjali and Joe, I immediately knew that their’s would be an awesome celebration – they were warm, friendly, laid back and most importantly, totally in love!
A pre wedding party kicked off the celebrations, held at El Fenn, a stunning riad, with a roof top terrace, nestled amongst the narrow lanes of the Medina, a stones through from the busy day time Souks. As a music producer and songwriter, it was only fitting that Joe performed that evening to his bride to be and guests.
The wedding ceremony took place at the Beldi Country Club, which mixes traditional Moroccan architecture and decor with French sensibilities and has a choice of locations for couples to marry. Anjali and Joe chose the garden room, full of light and hanging plants. This fitted well with the ‘Topic Utopia’ theme of Anjali’s dress that included not only lavender, jasmine, palm and fern in the embroidery, but also the words from one of Joe’s songs woven into the lace.
‘my heart beats, but it needs you to sing’
Music is such a large part of Anjali and Joe’s life. Joe played Bob Dylan whilst he proposed to Anjali, the readings chosen during the ceremony also included a bit more Bob Dylan, with the timely lyrics:
“May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift..”
Uttered the moment the winds picked up and the heavens opened. A few drips through the roof were met with humour and didn’t dampen the spectacular traditional Sri Lankan ‘Lighting the Unity Oil Lamp’ where Joe and Anjali’s parents joined them in lighting the lamp to symbolise the union of their lives and families joining together and becoming one.
Music, dance, food and joy were a huge part of the day. Gnawa dancers opened the reception celebrations, pulling moves that were awe inspiring! After live Moroccan music and some fire eaters, Joe and Anjali made an entrance of traditional Palanquins. Belly dancers accompanied the exceptional, Moroccan food, and some guests were more than happy to get involved in the dancing. This was all topped off with a traditional Moroccan band playing their own versions of more Bob Dylan classics! The celebrations and partying carried on into the early hours with a good friend of Anjali and Joe hitting the decks and keeping the dance floor going!
