So you are engaged – congratulations!  The next step is finding the perfect place for your wedding.  York is an amazing city full of vibrancy, history and amazing wedding venues.  The York wedding scene has really changed in the last few years.  When I got married a few years back, what we both wanted was a laid back barn wedding or a large field for marquees and live music.  There was nothing!  Fast forward to today and you are spoilt for choice with the York barn wedding venues on offer.

Although based in York, as an award-winning wedding photographer, I travel all over the UK, and further, for weddings.  However, there is nothing better than being part of an amazing wedding in one of the fantastic York Barn Wedding venues that are on offer.  Read on to find out more!

Top 10 York Barn Wedding Venues

The Normans

The Normans is a converted 18th Century farm just on the outskirts of York.  This was lovingly restored with weddings in mind, and they really have thought of everything!  The ceremony Barn is a magnificent beamed building full of rustic charms and quaint lighting.  There is an open plan courtyard for drinks and canape receptions, and in the evening the fire pit is lit. Then an extra large barn that is fully kitted out for your reception and party, as well as snug.  The Norman’s team really know how to host a wedding and this charming farm conversion is nothing but stunning.

York Maze

York Maze have been hosting weddings for just over 10 years now, and it is always a popular venue for couples.  The site is just a few miles outside of York and easy for your guests to get into the centre via taxis when the celebrations are over.  The site only hosts weddings in April, May and June.  There are a range of barns and outbuildings to be used for your celebrations, or you may choose to also have the addition of a tipi or two.  The barns are licenced for civil ceremonies and the barn looks amazing when set out with rows of simple benches facing the slightly raised platform where the couple stand.  This venue is perfect for those of you who want to add your own touches, as they are flexible with your decor and styling.  There is also the option for guests to camp over – perfect!

Hornington Manor

Hornington Manor may often be missed in Google searches for York Barn Wedding Venues, but this fantastic venue really is one of the best in York.  Located in Bolton Percy on the outskirts of York, when you hire Hornington Manor for your wedding, you get full reign of the manor house, barns and outside spaces for you and your guests.  You become ‘Lords of the Manor’!  The Gallery has floor to ceiling windows giving panoramic views across the countryside and making the room light and airy.  For smaller ceremonies, you can marry in the West Wing.  There is also a barn full of rustic charm and extensive outdoor spaces for drinks receptions, or you can opt to hold your ceremony outside.

Barmby Fields Barn

A 30-minute drive from the city centre is Barmy Fields Barn  A collection of restored barns and outbuildings that really are charming.  The large barn seats over 100 people and the team are more than happy for you to add all your personal touches to the decor of the interior.  The bar leads off from the main room, and there is plenty of outdoor space for your guests.  For the colder evenings, there is an upstairs snug with an open fire.  The venue often allows you access to the buildings for 3 days, enough time for you to personalise and enjoy the build up to your big day.

York Barn

A relative newcomer to the York Barn Wedding Venue scene is York Barn, Villa Farm.    Only 4 miles from York centre, this fantastic venue also has accommodation on offer for over 100 people.  York Barn perfectly blends rustic charm with a modern twist.  There are a range of outdoor or indoor locations you can choose for your wedding.  The barn itself was once a stable block but is now a light and airy space and is perfect for larger weddings.  For more intimate weddings then you can choose from a range of cottages on site.  If it’s an outdoor ceremony that you are after, then you can make your vows under the pergola in the garden pavilion.  If the weather is a concern, then you are welcome to opt for a marquee in the grounds.

Woodstock

Another newcomer to the York Barn Wedding venue scene is Woodstock.  This former horse stud has been converted into an amazing rustic venue.   Choose to get married at the site, or take your vows elsewhere and then head to Woodstock for your reception and celebrations.  Only a few miles outside of the city centre and easy each for you and your guests.  The barn can b decorated however you wish and you can truly make it yours.  There is an outdoor courtyard for your drinks reception, completed by a water feature.

Wharfedale Grange

I’ll admit, this venue is more Yorkshire than York, but really is worth checking out!  Again a fairly new venue to the York Barn Wedding venue scene, but Wharfdale Grange is stunning. Located between Harrogate and Leeds, and easy access from York. Full of rustic charms and timeless decor.  There are rooms for prep, a stunningly amazing ceremony room, a cocktail bar, and a prosecco tap amongst much more!  This rustic barn with a stunning feature window in front of where you exchange your vows really mixes charming features with a modern slant.  Many features and accessories for your day can be provided by the venue, including free robes for your morning prep!

Tithe Barn

Located in the grounds of Bolton Abbey, this venue is more Yorkshire than York – but only 45 minutes from the city. Tithe Barn is a 16th Century restored barn that is situated in the magnificent grounds of the abbey.   You are welcome to opt to take your vows at Priory church in the grounds before celebrating at the barn with your family and friends. Or maybe you want to opt for a marquee or tipi in the stunning grounds.  There is a range of choice and Tithe Barn offers it all.

Woolas Barn

Located in Appleton Roebuck on the outskirts of York, Woolas Barn is full of rustic character and has a beautiful simplicity.  There are four distinct spaces that you can utilise for your wedding day.  The Stables is perfect for your ceremony with its oak beams and exposed brickwork.  Filled with simple benches and charming lights, this room is full of charm and beauty.  The Granary is the oldest part of the barn and features a bar and reception area – perfect for the dancing too!  The lambing shed is where you dine.  Full of charm with it’s exposed brickwork and views across the courtyard.  The outdoor space of the courtyard is perfect for drinks receptions and also features an outdoor log fire!  In addition, there are snugs overlooking the dancefloor so you can watch the other’s party whilst you take a few moments to take in the excitement of the day.

Located between York and Harrogate Skipbridge Farm York Skipbridge Farm started hosting weddings after the owner’s daughter married on the site.  The weddings are now run by children of the owners and the site is also home to a menagerie of animals including llama and peacocks! This venue is more outdoor than the barn.  Skipbridge Farm host a range of Papakata teepees for your use as well as charming and quaint little buildings that host bars and retreat areas including the Rolling Barrel mobile Bar and the Grain Silo.  There is also a range of accommodation on site, well worth checking out this hidden treasure with quaint charm.
