“We are so happy and so overwhelmed by what you were able to do for us that day. The pictures are truly beautiful and bring us back to that wonderful night!!!”

American’s Rachel and Dave had decided to elope.  They picked Iceland.  They’d never been, but they wanted to do something different and they were drawn to the unique features Iceland had to offer, the volcanoes, geysers, glaciers and fjords – just the two of them in a place they’d always wanted to visit together.  However, their plans were scuppered when their friends got wind of their idea – and they were informed, in no uncertain terms, that wherever they planned to get married, there was no way they would be letting them do it without them. And so, their planned secret elopement turned into a wonderful, warm wedding with those they hold dear.

Theirs was a small and intimate affair.  The venue they chose was the remote and simply stunning Ion Hotel, one hours drive from Reykjavik.  A wondrous modernist concrete creation that stands proud against the landscape – and despite the driving rain also provided the backdrop (and a bit of shelter!) for Rachel and Dave’s first look.

After a simple and beautiful lakeside ceremony, braving the wind and rain and surrounded by the friends who followed them across the earth, we all headed back for the luxury and warmth of the Ion Hotel to eat, drank and party the night away – including some Icelandic liqueur shots were beyond potent…!

Dave and Rachel stayed on in Iceland for their honeymoon, and so the day after the wedding we headed off with some of their guests to see some sights, explore some of this amazing country and make some more pictures! An incredible few days I’ll never forget with a bunch of people whose love, fondness and friendship for each other are inspiring and wonderful in equal measure. Amazing!

Australians Nicky and Toby decided to wed in New Zealand, a relatively short flight to Queenstown from Sydney but such a change in the landscape!  The mountains of the South Island can only be described a breathtakingly beautiful.  Getting married there in the month of March meant the end of summer and the start of fantastic autumnal colours

In the world of awesome wedding couples, Nicky and Toby have it sorted:  They planned a celebration that was totally them, with friends playing a major role and all these guys know how to party!

Nicky was staying at Kohara Lodge in Queenstown – an awesome eco building elegantly integrated into the hillside.  I fell in love with this place as soon as I pulled up and it made for the perfect location to start the day

The guys started the day in true Queenstown style – with a FergBurger breakfast. It’s a Queenstown institution, with queues stretching permanently round the block. If you know, you know and if you don’t then go!

The ceremony was held at Peregrine Winery, just a 10-minute drive from Port Arthur, Queenstown. The vast landscape with the backdrop of the awe-inspiring mountains were nothing more than perfect for Nicky and Toby’s outside ceremony.  Nicky’s sister led the traditional Maori ceremony and it was incredibly moving and emotional. The Peregrine Winery hosts a wonderful barn that provided the perfect venue for the meal, speeches and some epic late night dancing.

New Zealand was just their first stop on what was to be an awesomely epic honeymoon as Nicky and Toby spent a couple of months travelling around Europe.  They are the best!

It’s hard not to fall in love with Marrkech.  The muted warm colours, busy souks and narrow darbs, the most awesome food and the thrill of surviving a taxi journey in the city!  Anjali and Joe choose the palatial Beldi Country Club just outside the Medina as the venue for their wedding.  I have to admit that when I entered the grounds, I was in awe!  Anjali and Joe were joined by their family an closest friends, travelling from all over the world to be with them to celebrate their wedding.    When I first chatted to Anjali and Joe, I immediately knew that their’s would be an awesome celebration – they were warm, friendly, laid back and most importantly, totally in love!

A pre wedding party kicked off the celebrations, held at El Fenn, a stunning riad, with a roof top terrace, nestled amongst the narrow lanes of the Medina, a stones through from the busy day time Souks.  As a music producer and songwriter, it was only fitting that Joe performed that evening to his bride to be and guests.

The wedding ceremony took place at the Beldi Country Club, which mixes traditional Moroccan architecture and decor with French sensibilities and has a choice of locations for couples to marry.  Anjali and Joe chose the garden room, full of light and hanging plants.  This fitted well with the ‘Topic Utopia’ theme of Anjali’s dress that included not only lavender, jasmine, palm and fern in the embroidery, but also the words from one of Joe’s songs woven into the lace.

‘my heart beats, but it needs you to sing’

Music is such a large part of Anjali and Joe’s life. Joe played Bob Dylan whilst he proposed to Anjali,  the readings chosen during the ceremony also included a bit more Bob Dylan, with the timely lyrics:

“May you have a strong foundation

When the winds of changes shift..”

Uttered the moment the winds picked up and the  heavens opened.  A few drips through the roof were met with humour and didn’t dampen the spectacular traditional  Sri Lankan  ‘Lighting the Unity Oil Lamp’ where Joe and Anjali’s parents joined them in lighting the lamp to symbolise the union of their lives and families joining together and becoming one.

Music, dance, food and joy were a huge part of the day.  Gnawa dancers opened the reception celebrations, pulling moves that were awe inspiring!  After live Moroccan music and some fire eaters, Joe and Anjali made an entrance of traditional Palanquins.  Belly dancers accompanied the exceptional, Moroccan food, and some guests were more than happy to get involved in the dancing.  This was all topped off with a traditional Moroccan band playing their own versions of more Bob Dylan classics! The celebrations and partying carried on into the early hours with a good friend of Anjali and Joe hitting the decks and keeping the dance floor going!

Best UK Wedding Photographer – Masters of Photography UK and IE Winner 2017

Best Wedding Photographer – Masters of Wedding Photography  UK and IE Winner 2017

best wedding photographer uk

I am really pleased to  have been announced as the 2017 winner for the  Masters of Wedding Photography UK and IE Competition.  The competition has four rounds through the year where photographers submit images so the judges get to see a range of each photographers work.

Throughout the rounds there were some amazing winning entries -it is so great to be part of such an inspiring and talented industry in the UK.   There have been so many stunning images entered by friends and peers in the wedding photography industry, and it’s great to see my fellow NineDots team all making the top five.  As a collective we offer training and mentoring opportunities for other photographers, including the ‘legendary’ NineDots gathering that takes place each year in London in November.  Check out NineDots on Facebook.

It goes without saying – what matters most to me about wedding photography is creating awesome images for my couples that they love and bring them meaning.  I aim to capture how my couples felt on the day, whilst creating them unique art that is ‘them’.  I don’t go turn up on the wedding day with long lists of shots I want to make, instead I  make the most of the opportunities as they arise – each image is as unique as each couple is.

Of the 17 images awarded, I thought I’d share a little bit behind some of my favourite winners!

His little girl – Aisling and her Father

best wedding photographer uk

I shoot 99% of each wedding day in a documentary approach – so I try to never influence what happens or direct people.  Instead, I love to spend the time looking for artistic and creative shots with what is already there.  I loved the symmetry of bride to be, Aisling and her father both finishing getting ready in adjacent rooms. There’s always something extra magical when a bride returns to her family home to get ready on the morning of her wedding. That fusion of past present and future really adds to the already heightened emotions!

Sam, Gemma and the seagull!

Although for the most part of the day I work in a documentary style approach, I do think portraits are an amazing chance for the couple to slip away from the party for a few minutes and take a few moments to just be together and realise how awesome the day is and the fact they are now married.  I always aim to fit the portraits in when the opportunities arrive, it may be between the courses of the meal, a few moments as we leave the ceremony – each day is different.  For this shot, we only went a few metres from the venue.  I love looking for little ‘extra’ things that can help elevate images to be even better – It was a great scene and Gemma and Sam (a good friend and wedding photographer!) were looking totally awesome already, but when the bird flew into shot it brought the extra with it!

The Dancefloor

best wedding photographer uk

When shooting weddings I’m often one of the first to arrive and the last to leave.  I want to capture every part of the day and i love getting stuck in and up close on the dance floor – it’s where the best action usually happens in the evening! And it meant I was in the perfect spot to capture the horrified reaction of an innocent bridesmaid 🙂

Sabrage

best wedding photographer uk

Some couples avoid wedding traditions, others embrace them whole heartedly.  The ‘sabrage’ is a cool tradition that we really need to see more of at weddings – it certainly beats your average bouquet toss or cake cut!.  Oli was overjoyed to get the chance to slice to top off the champagne bottle.  I knew the best place to capture this was to be right in front of the groom.  I got a little wet and covered in champagne and glass, but it was worth it!

So far 2017 has been an awesome year, so thank you to the judges, to all my fantastic photography peers and most of all to my awesome couples! Check out more of my work on my website, Facebook and Instagram.  If you looking for a photographer – get in touch.  I’d love to hear more about your plans!

Malcesine Wedding Photographer

Nicola & Nick – Lake Garda, Italy – Malcesine wedding photographer

Malcesine wedding photographer

“So I will follow you wherever you go
If your offered hand is still open to me
Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two we are one…”

Dave & Ray Davis knew what’s what when it came to a good melody and lyric… and Nicola and Nick knew exactly what was what when it came to organising their amazing wedding celebrations on Lake Garda – A handful of their closest friends and family joined them for a few days in the stunning small lake side village of Malcesine – nestled at the side of Lake Garda in the foothills of the Italian Dolomites.

The dramatic cliff-top castle of Castello Scaligero which overlooks the lake makes for a truly stunning location to get married – and after some R&R involving swimming in the lake, pizza and plenty of ice-creams – the guests made their way there and were joined by Nicola who arrived in maximum European style in an old fiat 500 that managed to just fit through the narrow, cobbled alleys of Malcesine to get her to the ceremony. To cool off afterwards we all headed out for a boat ride and beers on Lake Garda before coming back to celebrate the night away at the amazing lake side restaurant of Al Corsaro – nestled in beneath the castle cliffs.

I’m so lucky to get to travel to the places I do in the name of this job (if I can even call it that!) – but what is really special is getting to spend time with the people and being able to document their relationships and friendships, and to try to capture a little bit of who they all are at such an amazingly exciting time of their lives.

An amazing couple – madly in love – surrounded by the people who mean the most to them in the entire world – sharing incredible experiences and times in beautiful and interesting locations – and being able to document these best days of their lives so they can remember and enjoy it for the rest of their lives. That’s what makes it so special! I say it all the time – but regardless of where you choose to get married, the most important ingredient is the people you invite – and with their close knit bunch of family and friends Nick and Nicola got it spot on. The two of them, with the most important people in their lives, in a beautiful place celebrating their life and love. Perfect!

Here’s a taste of what I saw that day… enjoy!
