Best UK Wedding Photographer – Masters of Photography UK and IE Winner 2017

Best Wedding Photographer – Masters of Wedding Photography  UK and IE Winner 2017

best wedding photographer uk

I am really pleased to  have been announced as the 2017 winner for the  Masters of Wedding Photography UK and IE Competition.  The competition has four rounds through the year where photographers submit images so the judges get to see a range of each photographers work.

Throughout the rounds there were some amazing winning entries -it is so great to be part of such an inspiring and talented industry in the UK.   There have been so many stunning images entered by friends and peers in the wedding photography industry, and it’s great to see my fellow NineDots team all making the top five.  As a collective we offer training and mentoring opportunities for other photographers, including the ‘legendary’ NineDots gathering that takes place each year in London in November.  Check out NineDots on Facebook.

It goes without saying – what matters most to me about wedding photography is creating awesome images for my couples that they love and bring them meaning.  I aim to capture how my couples felt on the day, whilst creating them unique art that is ‘them’.  I don’t go turn up on the wedding day with long lists of shots I want to make, instead I  make the most of the opportunities as they arise – each image is as unique as each couple is.

Of the 17 images awarded, I thought I’d share a little bit behind some of my favourite winners!

His little girl – Aisling and her Father

best wedding photographer uk

I shoot 99% of each wedding day in a documentary approach – so I try to never influence what happens or direct people.  Instead, I love to spend the time looking for artistic and creative shots with what is already there.  I loved the symmetry of bride to be, Aisling and her father both finishing getting ready in adjacent rooms. There’s always something extra magical when a bride returns to her family home to get ready on the morning of her wedding. That fusion of past present and future really adds to the already heightened emotions!

Sam, Gemma and the seagull!

Although for the most part of the day I work in a documentary style approach, I do think portraits are an amazing chance for the couple to slip away from the party for a few minutes and take a few moments to just be together and realise how awesome the day is and the fact they are now married.  I always aim to fit the portraits in when the opportunities arrive, it may be between the courses of the meal, a few moments as we leave the ceremony – each day is different.  For this shot, we only went a few metres from the venue.  I love looking for little ‘extra’ things that can help elevate images to be even better – It was a great scene and Gemma and Sam (a good friend and wedding photographer!) were looking totally awesome already, but when the bird flew into shot it brought the extra with it!

The Dancefloor

best wedding photographer uk

When shooting weddings I’m often one of the first to arrive and the last to leave.  I want to capture every part of the day and i love getting stuck in and up close on the dance floor – it’s where the best action usually happens in the evening! And it meant I was in the perfect spot to capture the horrified reaction of an innocent bridesmaid 🙂

Sabrage

best wedding photographer uk

Some couples avoid wedding traditions, others embrace them whole heartedly.  The ‘sabrage’ is a cool tradition that we really need to see more of at weddings – it certainly beats your average bouquet toss or cake cut!.  Oli was overjoyed to get the chance to slice to top off the champagne bottle.  I knew the best place to capture this was to be right in front of the groom.  I got a little wet and covered in champagne and glass, but it was worth it!

So far 2017 has been an awesome year, so thank you to the judges, to all my fantastic photography peers and most of all to my awesome couples! Check out more of my work on my website, Facebook and Instagram.  If you looking for a photographer – get in touch.  I’d love to hear more about your plans!

Nicola & Nick – Lake Garda, Italy – Malcesine wedding photographer

“So I will follow you wherever you go
If your offered hand is still open to me
Strangers on this road we are on
We are not two we are one…”

Dave & Ray Davis knew what’s what when it came to a good melody and lyric… and Nicola and Nick knew exactly what was what when it came to organising their amazing wedding celebrations on Lake Garda – A handful of their closest friends and family joined them for a few days in the stunning small lake side village of Malcesine – nestled at the side of Lake Garda in the foothills of the Italian Dolomites.

The dramatic cliff-top castle of Castello Scaligero which overlooks the lake makes for a truly stunning location to get married – and after some R&R involving swimming in the lake, pizza and plenty of ice-creams – the guests made their way there and were joined by Nicola who arrived in maximum European style in an old fiat 500 that managed to just fit through the narrow, cobbled alleys of Malcesine to get her to the ceremony. To cool off afterwards we all headed out for a boat ride and beers on Lake Garda before coming back to celebrate the night away at the amazing lake side restaurant of Al Corsaro – nestled in beneath the castle cliffs.

I’m so lucky to get to travel to the places I do in the name of this job (if I can even call it that!) – but what is really special is getting to spend time with the people and being able to document their relationships and friendships, and to try to capture a little bit of who they all are at such an amazingly exciting time of their lives.

An amazing couple – madly in love – surrounded by the people who mean the most to them in the entire world – sharing incredible experiences and times in beautiful and interesting locations – and being able to document these best days of their lives so they can remember and enjoy it for the rest of their lives. That’s what makes it so special! I say it all the time – but regardless of where you choose to get married, the most important ingredient is the people you invite – and with their close knit bunch of family and friends Nick and Nicola got it spot on. The two of them, with the most important people in their lives, in a beautiful place celebrating their life and love. Perfect!

Here’s a taste of what I saw that day… enjoy!

Oslo Wedding Photography // Karoline & Espen

“Dance me to the wedding now, dance me on and on,
Dance me very tenderly and dance me very long,
We’re both of us beneath our love, we’re both of us above,
Dance me to the end of love…”

Oslo Wedding Photography

Karoline and Espen chose to get married in their vibrant hometown of Oslo.  The vibe was elegant and sophisticated, with a perfect blend of hip and totally awesome!

The morning’s torrential rain failed to dampen the intimate ceremony that had taken place at the beautiful Akerschus Slottskirke, a church located in the old fortress of Akershus Festning.  Only a limited number of weddings are held here, but Espen’s military past meant this totally unique and incredible venue was an option for them to hold their Oslo wedding. Whilst on holiday in Rome, Karoline found her awesome vintage dress (which was almost 100 years old) in a quaint vintage shop – and she looked the picture of grace and elegance. This vintage art deco theme was carried on in the reception, with palm leaves as decoration and champagne glass towers.  Sophistication with a touch of pure decadence (Leading into an epic party!).

Plenty of Norweigan wedding traditions were kept alive at the reception – held at an amazing private apartment in one of Oslo’s suburbs. At this Oslo wedding, it seemed that nearly every guest managed to do a speech and share their love and advice for the couple. Various recurring traditions included male guests kissing Karoline every time Espen’s back was turned, Female guests kissing Espen when Karoline wasn’t around, Karoline & Espen kissing under the table every time people stamped their feet and the pair of them kissing whilst stood on their chairs every time people clinked their cutlery! Needless to say, there was a lot of kissing and it was a wonderful atmosphere, filled with pure love and joy!

As the sun began to set, cigars were passed around,  one of their friends hit the DJ decks, and the party continued well into the Norweigan night. Oh, and it turns out K&E can waltz. Like, really waltz – and to Leonard Cohen too – so they are winning on pretty much every level!

Thank you to Karoline and Espen for having me along to capture their Oslo wedding it was a totally wonderful weekend.

I’m really humbled to have been chosen for a 2nd year to be on the Junebug Weddings annual ‘Best of the Best’ wedding photographers in the world 2016 – for this image I shot in September 2016. This photo was shot at Aisling and James’s amazing wedding at Left Bank in Leeds, England – and grabbed during a break between courses when the sun had lined up with the windows of their amazing venue.

Best UK Wedding Photographer – winner of the Masters of Wedding Photography Award

Best UK Wedding Photographer – Masters of Wedding Photography

I am really pleased to be first place in the Masters of Wedding Photography UK and IE Competition. The competition has four rounds through the year. At the end of 2016 and after two rounds, I’m currently in the lead with 10 awards for my selected images making me the current Best UK Wedding Photographer.

I the most recent round I had 4 winning images. There were some amazing winning entries – so great to be part of such an inspiring and talented industry in the UK. I’m honoured to have my images selected by the Jury members including Ed Peers, Isabelle Hattink and Mauricio Javier Arias Mora. The Master’s of Wedding Photography competition is great to be part of, and it’s always fun seeing the stunning images entered by my friends and peers in the industry.

Best UK Wedding Photographer

What I cannot say enough though is – what matters to me the most is working with my fantastic couples and being able to give them images they love and will cherish forever. It’s why I do what I do and would have it no other way. The best award is knowing I’ve captured their day, and the people who matter to them, and they have images that help them relive their day and how they felt over and over again.

2017 is going to be a great year for me personally and professionally. I can’t wait for some of the trips that I’ve got booked – with weddings in New Zealand, Africa, Europe and all over the UK. As well as presenting at workshops and conferences such as Way up North in Rome in April and at Bujaka photo camp in Finland in the Autumn. I’ll be sharing my knowledge and skills over 2 days at the end of February/early March on the NineDots workshops in Manchester. And of course, the legendary NineDots Gathering that takes place in November in London.
